Faber
Book of Exploration error! Chris Bonington, who has - as you'd expect
- an extremely professional knowledge of his subject as well as an extraordinary
eye for detail, was the first to break the news to me that the Faber Book contained
a mountaineering blunder. Though he kindly said that he might be the only person
to notice it, sadly he wasn't - it was also picked up by, among other mountain
enthusiasts no doubt, the extraordinary writer / producer Hugh Thomson, who
has recently discovered an Incan 'Lost City'. Anyway, the flaw is this: in an
effort to hack the book down to a more manageable size, the editor Walter and
I shuffled and reshuffled pages, and somehow - this must have happened in
India, where the book was transcribed! - Tilman's account of his eventual ascent
of Nanda Devi got added to the end of Shipton's account of his earlier reconnaissance
of Nanda Devi with Tilman. (Thus, Shipton's extract, starting page 726, will
be amended in new additions to Reconnaissance of Nanda Devi with Tilman (1936).
This extract will end on P 729, line 23, and the remainder of the extract be entitled
Nanda Devi 'succumbs' - Tilman's ascent with Noel Odell.) Sorry! This
is obviously annoying - not least for me, as I started work on this book a good
2 years ago! 10/7/03 |
